Why worry about rust forming on damaged vehicles?

At ChipsAway Ipswich we love are cars, so really enjoy looking after customers vehicles and seeing there smiles when they return to pick up the newly repaired vehicles. We offer a lifetime ownership guarantee as long as there is no rust visible on the damage, so its vitally important to get repairs sorted quickly, before the rust forms.

What is Rust?

Rust is an iron oxide, usually red oxide formed by the redox reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Several forms of rust are distinguishable both visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances.

So rust will form quicker in wet conditions, and also in the presence of salt, making cars near the coast more susceptible. Also during winter months when the roads are salted this will also speed up the formation of rust on metal panels. The paint and lacquer covering the metalwork of your vehicle acts as barrier, not allowing the salt and water to corrode the metal, so as soon as the paintwork is damaged the metal is then open to the elements, making it possible for rust to form.

Why worry if rust forms?

Once rust gets into the metal, it will eat its way in, and will always continue to thrive, even if the panel is then painted over. So the rust will always come back through, meaning continuous repairs will be needed to keep on top of it, causing much expense. Or the panel would need to be replaced, then eradicating the rust issue, but again a much more expensive repair.

So what can you do to prevent rust?

As soon as you spot some damage, get it repaired as soon as possible. You can also use a touch in stick to seal the panel again, until the repair can be completed. It is possible in the right conditions, for rust to form with hours/days. So acting quickly can help reduce your repair bills.
